At What Age Should One Start Focusing on Anti-Ageing Products?
It is commonplace to see our clients in their 40s and 50s become interested in anti-ageing treatments – understandable as they start noticing visible changes and become concerned about retarding the ageing process. It is never too late to start, but methods to defer the ageing process should commence much earlier.
As our largest organ, our skin warrants care and concern from our tender years. Parents should apply sunscreen on their children from an early age to avoid sunburn and the resultant problematic pigmentation that becomes visible later in life. From double digits onwards, tweens should be encouraged to cleanse and moisturise their faces daily and use sunscreen regularly. This early management of harmful bacteria on the skin, daily nourishment, hydration and sun protection will reap significant benefits for the skin down the track.
We start to see the effects of ageing occur around our mid-20s. The production of collagen in our bodies is significantly reduced as we stop growing and fine lines and wrinkles start to appear. This makes it the perfect time to start the use of eye creams and a moisturiser with anti-ageing actives. It is also time to introduce a serum and retinol into your skincare regime.
The early 20s – Prevent and Protect:
Adopt a skincare routine that will keep the skin hydrated and introduce anti-oxidants like Vitamin C to stimulate collagen production and offer protection from free radicals. Use sunscreen daily and have regular facials to exfoliate and hydrate the skin.
25 to 35 – Prevent, Protect and Defend
Around this period, the skin’s structural proteins decrease and the skin loses radiance. Hyperpigmentation, dark spots and fine lines can become visible on the skin’s surface. The use of peels or micro-needling can easily correct these imperfections. As a bonus, these procedures also stimulate collagen production thereby targeting premature ageing concerns.
35 to 45 – Protect, Defend and Restore
During these years, delay the ageing process with treatments such as skin tightening, which works on cellular regeneration and collagen production. This treatment targets fine lines and wrinkles, tightens loose skin and reduces open pores. Invest in a professional peel to improve the skin surface, encourage cell turnover and give it a healthy glow. As always, consistency and the correct home care are key factors and are rewarded by visible results.
45 and over – Prevent, Preserve and Rebuild
In the late 40s, wrinkles deepen, pores enlarge and there is a noticeable reduction in skin firmness. A treatment like Fractional Radio Frequency targets these concerns and tightens the skin around the face and neck. A retinol product for radiance and regeneration is a must-have as are anti-oxidants and Hyaluronic Acid. Again, a consistent homecare routine is critical.
In conclusion, it is never too early to start taking care of your skin – it is also never too late to start! The right therapist or aesthetician, reputable products and treatments and a committed home care regime will always assist in slowing down the ageing process and improving skin quality.
